To Serve or Be Served

We all value good service.  We want waiters to listen to our requests, be pleasant and treat us with respect, we want doctors, hair stylists/barbers, service repair personnel, etc. to show they value our time by not keeping us waiting well-beyond our appointment time. And let’s be honest, we can sometimes become quite indignant if we’re not getting the service we think we deserve.

The question is how do we show up or measure up when we have an opportunity to serve others? Do we take the same care and concern with others’ needs, desires and feelings as we expect from them?

As Christians, how we show up, how we treat others (regardless of whether they deserve our kindness) can change the atmosphere. Let’s be the salt and light this dying world is desperately lacking, and adopt a heart of service that will draw others and soften hearts like nothing else can.

Are you ready to serve rather than be served? If so, then you’ll fulfill Jesus’ words to Peter in John 21:17

He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me [with a deep, personal affection for Me, as for a close friend]?” Peter was grieved that He asked him the third time, “Do you [really] love Me [with a deep, personal affection, as for a close friend]?” And he said to Him, “Lord, You know everything; You know that I love You [with a deep, personal affection, as for a close friend].” Jesus said to him, “Feed My sheep.”
